Kings Peak Day #2 -7/26/12

Day 2 - Good news the bear bags worked. No one got eaten during the night. From the Red Castle camp we had to back track about a half mile to get the trail that would take us up to Smith Fork Lake and over Smith Fork Pass to the Kings Peak Base Camp.  Spirits were generally high as seen below.  Notice Rob is not in the picture.  I think he was enjoying the solitary of hiking by himself.  And maybe he was tired of us already.  You never know.
The dudes and Red Castle.  From L to R, John, Geoff, Eddie, Shawn, Chad

Like the bonus features on a DVD.  Same photo, different angle.

Moving across the meadow.
One of the streams from the lake.
Red Castle Lake is just above Chad's head.  View looking back to the west as we move East toward the pass.

As you leave the meadow surrounding Red Castle you start to gain some elevation following a ridge up out of the valley.  It is really awesome.  You can literally watch the climate zone changes as you pass through 9K, 10K and 11K until you are are above the tree line.  Looking down in to the valley I think it would make a great golf course.

Outlet from Smith Fork Pass Lake.  Notice the small pines instead of the big pines.  Tree line.

Uinta Wilderness Golf Course.

Smith Fork Pass Lake.  Elevation 11,223 Ft.  23ft above the tree line.  We enjoyed a lovely lunch here.  We would be camping here for our last night before trucking home.
From the Lake there was about 900 more feet of elevation in just under a mile to get to Smith Fork Pass.  All fueled up, we put our heads down and chanted, "I think I can."

Almost there.

There.
Commence napping.
More napping.

And then a little magic at 12,000 ft.  He was really happy.
Looking east off the pass
A picture of me taking the photo above.  Just like the DVD special features.

Coming down off the pass toward Base Camp.

"You guys good with this camp?"
"Yep."
A good foot soak felt good.  And I think they were filtering water at the same time.  Guess you gotta trust that filter.
Ahhhhh......

We went off and did some post dinner exploring.  Found all sorts of cool features.  Flowers, water falls, snow fields, rock pedestals.  Wilderness.

Kings Peak on my right side.  South Kings Peak on the left.

Planning the next day's adventure.
I think we were all in bed by 8:30pm.  Enjoyed some fantastic man conversation.  Guns, end of the world and well,  some other stuff too.
